Israeli military to mobilize approximately 50,000 reserve personnel
In a significant development, Israel has announced plans to mobilize approximately 50,000 reservists ahead of the takeover of the city of Gaza, with an expected total of 120,000 reservists to be deployed. The city, which remains occupied by Israeli troops, serves as the primary stronghold of the Islamic terrorist organization Hamas.
Israeli troops are already present in suburbs of the city, including the neighborhoods of Al-Saitun and Djabalija. The military's operation aims to destroy Hamas's underground tunnel system and take control of the city.
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has been highlighted by human rights organizations, with approximately one million civilians estimated to be in the city. The Israeli army is collaborating with international aid organizations to ensure the supply of medical aid and food for the displaced civilians, who will be moved to tent camps further south.
However, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an organization created by Israel in February 2025 with U.S. support and operating under Israeli military control, has been widely condemned by the UN, over 170 charities including Save the Children and Oxfam, and human rights experts for violating humanitarian principles and exposing civilians to deadly attacks during aid distribution. Other major international NGOs have been largely unable to operate independently due to restrictions and threats from Israeli authorities.
Active soldiers will play a significant role in the takeover of the city, as Hamas still has "operational capabilities" and can wage a "guerrilla war." The service for these reservists is expected to begin in September, with draft notices expected to be sent out in the coming days.
The Israeli army's plan has sparked international concern and criticism, with many questioning the impact on the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The situation remains fluid, and updates are expected as the operation progresses.
