"Jane Fonda remains vocal and passionate in her activism at the age of 87"

In the glittering setting of the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 23, 2025, 87-year-old Academy Award-winning actor Jane Fonda delivered a passionate critique of the Trump administration. Accompanied by a political activist collaborator, Fonda's speech was a powerful reminder of her enduring activist spirit.

Fonda's activism dates back to the 1970s, a time when her political views were met with controversy. Her vocal opposition to the Vietnam War led to death threats and a strained relationship with some, including her father, Henry Fonda. Henry Fonda, known for his roles in 12 Angry Men and Young Mr. Lincoln, had a complicated relationship with women, objectifying them, a fact that may have influenced Jane's views.

However, it was her experiences in Paris and the book The Village of Ben Suc that truly ignited Fonda's activist fire. Exposed to American soldiers who had turned against the Vietnam War, Fonda felt compelled to take action. This led to her becoming an activist in her 30s.

One of Fonda's most infamous moments came during a trip to North Vietnam in 1972. A photograph of her sitting on an anti-aircraft gun became symbolic of her controversial activism. In the 1980s, Fonda turned to a different kind of activism - fitness. She filmed a workout video to fund her political action committee, the Campaign for Economic Democracy. To everyone's surprise, the video became an unexpected bestseller.

Throughout her life, Fonda has faced personal challenges. She has struggled with an eating disorder known as bulimia and has spoken openly about her mother's suicide when she was just 12 years old. Recently, Fonda announced she can discontinue chemotherapy treatments as her cancer is in remission.

Fonda's activism continues to be a driving force in her life. She reflects on death as a healthy practice and encourages activism in the current political climate. "We have to go out, we have to speak, we have to shout, we have to find nonviolent ways to avoid what's happening - which we're very, very close to becoming fascist in this country," she stated.

Fonda's journey as an activist serves as a reminder of the power of speaking out and standing up for what one believes in, even in the face of adversity. Her impact on politics, fitness, and popular culture continues to be felt today.
