Japanese Government Dismisses Report of Tokyo Olympics Cancellation

In a press conference held in Tokyo on Friday, the Japanese government dismissed a report suggesting the potential cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Manabu Sakai in response to questions about a publication in The British newspaper The Times.

The publication, which cited a source in the Japanese government, claimed that the Tokyo Olympics should be cancelled due to the coronavirus. However, Sakai and the Japanese government have firmly denied this report, stating that no such decision has been made.

It is important to note that the Tokyo Olympics were originally scheduled for July 24 to August 9, 2020, but were postponed due to the pandemic. They have since been rescheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Despite the postponement, the name "Tokyo 2020" has been retained for the Olympics.

Despite the report of a potential cancellation, the Tokyo Olympics are currently still planned to proceed in 2021. The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, has previously stated that the Tokyo Olympics should not be cancelled.

The Japanese government has not made any official announcement regarding the privately concluded decision to cancel the Tokyo Olympics. The announcement made by Sakai was reported by Almaty.tv with reference to TASS.

The Tokyo Olympics, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, remain a symbol of hope and resilience for many around the world. The Japanese government's commitment to ensuring the safe and successful hosting of the games continues to be a source of reassurance for athletes and spectators alike.
