Alpecin's Jasper Philipsen Takes the First Stage of Vuelta a España 2025

The first stage of the Vuelta a España 2025 saw an exciting race unfold, with Jasper Philipsen from Alpecin claiming the victory in a thrilling mass sprint.

The stage, spanning 186 kilometers, began with an escape group consisting of six riders: Vinokourov, De la Calle, Reinderink, Nicolau, Bouwman, and Verre. This group managed to gain more than two minutes on the peloton early in the race.

However, the peloton maintained control over the escape group, minimizing the risk to the sprinters' victory. Hugo de la Calle, one of the escapees, held on for 45 kilometers after his fellow escapees were swallowed up by the peloton, earning him the title of the most combative rider of the day.

As the race neared its end, the potential for a crash or pile-up was present, but control was maintained throughout the stage. The last 20 kilometers picked up significantly in search of the first places.

In the final sprint, it was Philipsen who displayed his power and dominance over his rivals, winning the mass sprint in the arrival to Novara. This marked his second victory in the Tour de France and the first stage of the Vuelta a España 2025.

García Cortina managed a commendable fifth place in the sprint, while David González from Q36 finished sixth. Verre, who won the La Serra climb, a third-category climb, will wear the mountain jersey at least until tomorrow's stage.

Teams of the general classification, such as Visma and UAE, sought to have their leaders at the front during the race. Lidl-Trek controlled the pace of the race for most of the stage, with Alpecin accumulating many men behind.

The first stage of a Grand Tour often creates a tense atmosphere due to the fear of ruining months of work at the first sign of trouble. However, Philipsen's strong performance has set a positive tone for the rest of the Vuelta a España 2025.

Unfortunately, neither Merlier nor Milan attended the Vuelta a España 2025, in part due to Philipsen's early abandonment in the past Tour de France. As for the Giro d'Italia 2026, no information about the winner of the second stage, which started on February 2, 2026, in Verona, is available yet as the event is in the future and no results have been published.
