Jon Bernthal takes on double duty for The Punisher special, not only starring but also penning the script
In an exciting turn of events for Marvel fans, Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as the Punisher (Frank Castle) in the highly anticipated series, Daredevil: Born Again. The series, now streaming on Disney+, sees Bernthal's character once again at the forefront, this time in a collaboration with his frequent collaborator director, Reinaldo Marcus Green.
Bernthal has been writing the Punisher's upcoming Marvel Television special, which is described as a visceral, psychologically complex, unforgiving, no-holds-barred exploration of Castle turning his back to the audience. The storyline also involves someone using the Punisher emblem against Castle's code for things he does not stand for.
Bernthal believes that there's a little bit of Frank in all of us, as exemplified by a line in the show: "We're all one bad day away from being me." He appreciates Marvel's vision and agency in allowing him to take the character to where he wants to go.
In Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal's Punisher character has no time for the gray. His ultra-violence is brought to light in a head-to-head discussion with Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock. The series also promises that all violence in the special will have a cost, and the audience will see the cost.
Interestingly, Bernthal found fresh interest in returning to the Punisher character due to Marvel's choice to go full ultra-violence. However, the director involved in Bernthal's Marvel television special for the Punisher on Disney+ is not explicitly named in the search results.
Meanwhile, Dario Scardapane, executive producer and writer of The Punisher, is re-working Daredevil: Born Again. Both seasons of Bernthal's Punisher Netflix series are available on Disney+ for those who want to catch up on the character's previous adventures.
Bernthal's one-scene appearance on Daredevil: Born Again opened the door to getting closer to the Frank Castle he wants to portray. He pitched an outline for the project before writing it, and he describes the arc for his Punisher character as finally getting to where the character is supposed to be.
Marvel has a vision of where they want the Punisher to go and the world in which they want him to exist. Bernthal's portrayal of the character in Daredevil: Born Again seems set to deliver on that promise, making it a must-watch for fans of the Punisher and Marvel's grittier side.
