Tom Brown: A Man of Science and Passion
Tom Brown, a South African native, has had a diverse and intriguing life, marked by a deep love for science, literature, and the beauty of nature.
Born and bred in South Africa, Brown's academic journey began with a flair for science and mathematics. He excelled in competitions during high school and completed two years of mechanical engineering before pursuing a more theoretical path.
In 1997, Brown graduated with an MSc from the University of South Africa (Unisa), and in 2006, he earned his PhD in solid state physics from UniversitΓ© Paris-Sud. His academic interests lie in the realm of abstract analysis, Markov operators, stochastic processes, vector-valued Laplace transforms, and families of evolution equations.
Despite a hiatus from academic activity, Brown's published work is limited. However, he has not let this deter him from continuing his intellectual pursuit. Recently, he has started studying mathematics and its applications once again.
Brown's professional life has seen him hold permanent teaching positions at Unisa and Wits. He looks forward to being involved in formal research and teaching in the future.
Outside the realm of academia, Brown is a man of diverse interests. He appreciates the awe-inspiring spectacle of rain, lightning thunderstorms, and rainbows. His love for nature is further evidenced by his recreational activities, which include nature hikes, camping, fishing, and enjoying the great outdoors.
Brown's literary tastes are equally eclectic. His favourite authors include Jules Verne, HG Wells, Jack London, Shakespeare, William Blake, and Dylan Thomas. The Narnia stories and the Lord of the Rings are his all-time favourite adventure, science fiction, and fantasy movies.
When it comes to personal matters, Brown prefers romantic experiences over dining at home. He enjoys eating out and shares a special bond with his late Maltese poodle, Freddy.
In a poignant quote, Brown muses, "God is in the details of the details. God is in the timing of the timing." This sentiment seems to echo through his life, a testament to his meticulous approach to both science and life.
