Extremadura Honours Journalist Julián Quiros for Defence of Terrorism Victims

In a ceremony held by the regional government of Extremadura, journalist Julián Quiros was awarded the Medal for the Defense of the Victims of Terrorism. The honour recognizes his commitment to the cause, particularly his work against the "political whitewashing of terrorism and in defense of historical memory."

Quiros, currently director of ABC, has been lauded for his consistent stance against timidity before terrorism and the presence of the political heirs of ETA in political pacts. His tenure at ABC, which began in 2020, has been marked by his unwavering condemnation of such practices.

Prior to his role at ABC, Quiros served as director of the 'Hoy' newspaper in Extremadura. His work in this capacity has also been celebrated, with many noting his brave sensitization through the media of the barbarity of terrorism.

Joining Quiros in receiving the honour was Enrique Juan Martín Bernadi, colonel of the Army of Land and Sea, and María de los Ángeles Pedraza, mother of Myriam who tragically lost her life in the 11-M attacks. The former president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism was also honoured, but no name was provided.

Miguel Ángel Folguera, spokesman for the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT), praised the Extremaduran government for its support of victims. He emphasized the importance of promoting education in educational centres of values such as tolerance, coexistence, and defence of fundamental rights.

María Guardiola, the president of the Junta de Extremadura, valued Quiros' work, stating that the Law of Victims of Terrorism in Extremadura is a reference for "sensitivity and commitment," with a law that places "the person at the centre." She defended a message of unity, solidarity, and defence of coexistence against hatred and irrationality.

José María Antón, president of the Extremaduran Association of Victims of Terrorism, defined the law as "crucial," but believes more needs to be done to recognize "all victims." He emphasized the region's commitment to the victims of terrorism.

Folguera criticized the Minister of the Interior for treating victims as if they had "damaged Spain," when in reality they had "defended it even by giving their lives." He reiterated the need for continued support and recognition for these brave individuals.

With Quiros now one of the most illustrious Extremadurans for his "iron-clad commitment" to the defense of all victims of terrorism and the fight against ETA, it is clear that his work continues to make a significant impact. María de los Ángeles Pedraza, also honoured, serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of terrorism and the importance of remembering and honouring its victims.
