Juventus emerges victorious in a Serie A match, with Canadian forward Jonathan David making his debut and scoring a goal; meanwhile, Atalanta and Pisa end their match in a draw.

In the opening weekend of the 2022-2023 Serie A season, several matches delivered thrilling moments and unexpected outcomes.

At the Sardegna Arena, Cagliari and Fiorentina played out a dramatic 1-1 draw. Sebastiano Luperto scored deep in stoppage time to salvage a point for the home team, after Fiorentina had taken the lead earlier in the match.

Meanwhile, at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, newly-signed striker Jonathan David made his Juventus debut in style, scoring the opening goal in their 2-0 victory over Parma. Dusan Vlahovic sealed the win with a second goal, but the match was not without controversy as Juventus finished the game with 10 men after Andrea Cambiaso was sent off.

Elsewhere, Pisa, which finished second in Serie B last season, drew their first match back in Serie A since 1991, against Atalanta. Pisa surprisingly took the lead against Atalanta in the 26th minute, but were leveled just five minutes into the second half, thanks to a goal from Gianluca Scamacca.

One of the most impressive goals of the weekend came from Como, who secured a 1-1 draw against Lazio in their season opener. Nico Paz gathered the ball inside his own half and feinted past a Lazio player before threading an impressive through ball for Tasos Douvikas to run onto and score the first goal for Como. Lazio thought they had equalized 10 minutes before the end of the match, but Taty Castellanos' strike was ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside.

In a first for Italian soccer, referee Gianluca Manganiello announced the decision live to the stadium during the match between Como and Lazio. This new approach to explaining VAR decisions in real time has been introduced from this season in Serie A.

Ivan Juric, who previously coached several Serie A teams including CFC Genoa, Hellas Verona, Torino, and AS Roma, took over as head coach of Atalanta following the departure of Gian Piero Gasperini. Under Juric's leadership, Atalanta was a team transformed after halftime in their match against Pisa, with Scamacca's goal being a testament to their improved performance.

David, who scored 25 goals and provided 12 assists in 49 matches across all competitions for Lille last season, joined Juventus in July on a free transfer. He is Canada's all-time leading scorer with 36 goals in 67 appearances.

Overall, the opening weekend of the Serie A season delivered exciting football and plenty of talking points for fans to discuss in the days ahead.
