Kansas State Wildcats Edge Out North Dakota Fighting Hawks in Thrilling Contest
In a nail-biting encounter, the Kansas State Wildcats managed to hold off a spirited North Dakota Fighting Hawks challenge to secure a 38-35 victory at home.
The game started with a bang, as Avery Johnson, the star quarterback for the Wildcats, connected with Jayce Brown for a 44-yard touchdown pass, giving Kansas State an early lead. North Dakota responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive, with Jerry Kaminski recovering Grant Tylutki's fumble in the end zone for the score. The touchdown for North Dakota was a 22-yard pass from Kaminski to Korey Tai.
North Dakota, representing the FCS, were aiming for the biggest upset in their program's history against the Big 12 powerhouse Kansas State and were seeking their first victory over an FBS opponent since 2015. They took a 21-17 halftime lead with a 16-yard touchdown run by Seidl, thanks to a defensive penalty on fourth down and another penalty on second-and-21.
Kansas State showed resilience, converting two fourth-and-short attempts, leading to a 30-yard field goal by Luis Rodriguez. The score was tied at 35-35 after North Dakota's touchdown, with Avery Johnson's touchdown pass to Joe Jackson being the deciding factor in the game, securing the win for the Wildcats with 42 seconds left.
Johnson, considered one of the top quarterbacks in the Big 12, completed 28 out of 43 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns in the game. DeVon Rice scored two touchdowns for Kansas State, one on a 9-yard run and the other on a 13-yard scamper.
Jerry Kaminski, the quarterback for North Dakota, also had a solid game, completing 23 out of 38 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown, and scoring two touchdowns on the ground. Sawyer Seidl scored a 20-yard touchdown run, giving North Dakota a 35-31 lead with 4:19 left.
In a surprising move, Kansas State wore all-white uniforms at home for the first time in their program's history and it was the first time they wore white jerseys at home since 1991. The Wildcats' key scorers, apart from Johnson, include Joe Jackson, who contributed significantly with the deciding touchdown catch.
The Wildcats managed to avoid an embarrassing loss to North Dakota, keeping their record intact and maintaining their position in the Big 12. The Fighting Hawks, despite the defeat, can take pride in their valiant effort against a formidable opponent.
