"Karstadt proposes innovative plans for the expansive site"

On April 12th, the CDU is set to host an event titled "Karstadt and Co. Rethinking the city centre" at the former Marmstorf shooting range. The focus of the discussion will be the development of the Karstadt area in the Harburg district, which spans over 7,000 square meters.

The Karstadt area has been a topic of discussion for some time due to a lack of ideas about its future. Finance Senator Andreas Dressel and Urban Development Senator Karin Pein have expressed their excitement about the recently handed-over site.

Rainer Bliefernicht, the CDU's top candidate in the Harburg district election, has suggested private economic ideas and concepts for the long-term development of the area. He, along with Birgit Stöver, a CDU member of the parliament, emphasise that the area is open to various uses. However, Bliefernicht dismisses the idea of public facilities or a public-sector solution.

Bliefernicht and Stöver advocate for a sustainable interim use, a stance supported by Frank Richter of the SPD. Richter can imagine the area as a location for the city library and adult education centre, but without providing specific details.

The former Karstadt sports hall in the Mo has not been a popular attraction in the Hamburg city centre. Despite this, there have been repeated mentions of a "cultural use" for the Karstadt area, inspired by the sports hall. Initiatives like "Planet Harburg" and proposals from SuedKultur involving creative spaces have been considered, but these have faced setbacks.

As of now, no concrete proposals for an attractive use of the property have been presented. Birgit Stöver expects the city to present such proposals as soon as possible. The search results do not provide specific proposals from Stöver regarding an attractive use of the Karstadt site in Harburg.

Everyone agrees that the building needs interim use to prevent it from becoming a vacant eyesore. The event on April 12th will be an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and outline potential plans for the future of the Karstadt area in Hamburg's city centre.
