Khanmigo, explained: a learning tool associated with Sal Khan's GPT-4 model
Khan Academy, the renowned online learning platform, has unveiled a new addition to its suite of educational tools - Khanmigo. Launched in March 2023, Khanmigo is an interactive tutor powered by GPT-4, setting it apart from the free version of ChatGPT, which operates on GPT-3.5.
Khanmigo is designed to aid students in various aspects of their academic journey. It assists in structuring introductions, creating a proper academic tone, and building and supporting essay arguments. Unlike traditional learning platforms, Khanmigo does not do school work for students but acts as a tutor, helping them learn.
Instead of giving answers directly, Khanmigo encourages students to find answers by asking questions and guiding them. For instance, it can help with the essay writing process, such as creating a thesis, outlining, and finding data to support points. Moreover, Khanmigo can provide help with math questions, pointing out mistakes and encouraging students to try again.
The Academic Essay feedback tool, recently released by Khan Academy, is a significant feature of Khanmigo. This tool provides specific and actionable feedback on a student's essay, helping them improve their writing skills.
Khan Academy encourages districts to subscribe to Khan Academy for Districts to help improve Khanmigo for classroom use. District leaders can contact Khan Academy directly for pricing details on district subscriptions. Individual users can sign up with a personal account, but there is a fee associated with the tool. To create a personal account, users need to be 18 or older, create a free Khan Academy account, and choose a payment plan ($4/month or $44/year).
During the 2024 pilot program of Khanmigo, Khan Academy collaborated with schools including BASIS Scottsdale in Arizona, USA, and the Nueva School in California, USA. Khan Academy also tested Khanmigo with schools in New Jersey, Indiana, Arizona, and California during the pilot phase.
One of the key advantages of Khanmigo is its capability to carry on more sophisticated conversations for educational purposes, making it more capable of driving conversations compared to GPT-3.5. The frequency of factual hallucinations and math mistakes is less with Khanmigo compared to GPT-3.5.
Khan Academy invites districts to subscribe to Khan Academy for Districts to help improve Khanmigo for classroom use. With its advanced capabilities, Khanmigo is set to revolutionise the way students learn and interact with educational content.
