In a significant milestone, Port Klang, Malaysia, has secured a place in the prestigious Lloyd's Top 100 Ports list, marking the occasion of the country's 68th National Day celebration. This achievement comes as Port Klang and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) solidify Malaysia's position as the fifth-largest country in the world by container throughput in 2024.

In 2024, Port Klang handled 14.64 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 4.1% increase compared with 14.06 million TEUs in 2023. This growth was driven by a robust 8.9% increase in import and export activities. The expansion and modernization of Port Klang, which includes the ongoing development of terminals CT10-CT17 at Westports, is aimed at doubling handling capacity from 14 million TEUs to 28 million TEUs by 2028.

The Carey Island Project, a long-term mega development, could further transform Port Klang's role in global trade, potentially reaching 30 million TEUs in annual capacity by 2060. Meanwhile, Northport in Port Klang is upgrading Wharf 9 and related facilities to accommodate larger vessels and manage higher cargo volumes more effectively.

PTP, on the other hand, maintained its 15th place worldwide in container throughput and recorded a strong performance in 2024, handling 12.25 million TEUs, a 16.9% increase from the previous year.

The growth at Port Klang and PTP reflects Malaysia's solid trade fundamentals. Over the past year, both ports have climbed in global port rankings. Port Klang has seen a steady rise, climbing from 13th in 2022 to 11th in 2023, and then moving up a notch to 10th in 2024.

The expansion and modernization of Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas involve port authorities, government agencies such as Malaysia's Ministry of Transport, and private sector stakeholders including terminal operators and logistics companies.

Lloyd's List, a digital publication that provides news, analysis, data, and insight for the global shipping, maritime, trade, and insurance sectors, compiled the list of the world's busiest ports. The list serves as a benchmark for the performance of ports around the world and is closely watched by industry stakeholders.

With the ongoing expansion and modernization efforts, it is expected that Port Klang will handle 14.98 million TEUs in 2025, further cementing Malaysia's position as a significant player in the global shipping industry.
