Kobo's Recent Software Update Causes Problems for Older E-Readers

Kobo, a leading e-reader manufacturer, recently issued a firmware update for almost every e-reader they have ever made, including the Kobo Touch. However, the update caused many older Kobo e-readers to get stuck in a boot loop, making them unusable. In response, Kobo has pulled the update until they can fix the issue.

The reason for the update was due to Mozilla Pocket being discontinued. Kobo has established a partnership with Instapaper as a replacement for Mozilla Pocket. Instapaper is a read-it-later service, similar to Pocket, that can send web articles to your Kobo.

The exact Kobo devices affected by the renewed Instapaper partnership package, which are no longer sold by Kobo, include the Kobo Aura HD, Kobo Glo, Kobo Aura, and Kobo Mini.

If an e-reader gets stuck in a boot loop after the update, a manual reset will result in the loss of settings, downloaded books, sideloaded books, and a return of the device to its original state. Kobo has provided a help file with instructions on how to manually reset their devices.

Michael Kozlowski, a renowned figure in the e-reader industry, has not been mentioned as being directly involved in the Kobo update issue. Mr. Kozlowski, who has been writing about audiobooks, e-books, and e-readers for the past eighteen years, resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. However, his location does not appear to be relevant to the Kobo update issue or the partnership with Instapaper.

Despite extensive coverage of the Kobo update issue, Michael Kozlowski has not been reported as offering any solutions or further insights regarding the matter. The Kobo team is currently working to resolve the issue and will re-release the update once it is fixed.
