"Labor Party states that Rhodes-Vivour Acted Prematurely; He Should Have Mirrored Peter Obi's Strategies"
The political landscape in Nigeria has witnessed a significant shift, as Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the former Lagos governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move comes amidst criticism from the Labour Party, who view Rhodes-Vivour's decision as hasty and ill-advised.
Rhodes-Vivour's defection ceremony was held in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos. In a statement, he expressed his belief that the ADC represents a strong coalition to rescue Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. However, the Labour Party maintains that a rainbow coalition of multiple parties is necessary to achieve this goal, a strategy that Peter Obi, the LP's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, is currently employing.
Tony Akeni, politics adviser to the Labour Party, argued that Rhodes-Vivour should have taken a cue from Peter Obi, who has continued to engage opposition parties without leaving the LP. Akeni emphasized that no single opposition party can achieve this alone, and it was already a settled consensus within the LP that no single party could single-handedly dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
The Labour Party wishes Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour well in his political journey, but expects its members to engage in broad-based multi-party liaison with other opposition parties, without defecting. They believe that politicians who genuinely mean to serve their people should learn to hurry slowly.
In response to Rhodes-Vivour's decision, Akeni maintained that it was not the way forward. He argued that Rhodes-Vivour, like Peter Obi, should strive to form a broad, rainbow coalition of opposition parties that, through united multi-party liaison and electorate mobilization, can defeat the APC and President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 Nigerian elections.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact the upcoming elections and the future of Nigerian politics.
