Laos, the landlocked country in Southeast Asia, has been declared the most affordable destination in the region for 2025. This accolade comes as more than 1.2 million international travellers visited Laos in the first three months of the year, representing an 11% increase from the previous year.
The revenue generated from tourism during this period was over USD 426 million. This surge in tourism can be attributed to the country's authentic and less touristy experiences, low-cost activities, affordable accommodation, and meals.
Indian travellers looking to explore Laos should note that they require either an eVisa or a visa on arrival to enter the country, both of which can be arranged online before take-off.
Once in Laos, travellers will find that the country offers a quieter, slower alternative at a fraction of the cost compared to Thailand's beaches or Vietnam's street food. A dorm bed in a hostel in Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang can cost as low as INR 176, while in the cities of Vientiane and rural areas without mass tourism, the price is as little as INR 353.
