Masses Gather for Anti-War Demonstration in Cologne - Large-scale protest against war takes place in Cologne city center

In the heart of Cologne, Germany, this week, the anti-war alliance "Disarm Rheinmetall" has been making its presence felt through a series of protests and actions.

On Wednesday, activists blocked a Bundeswehr building, causing a stir in the political landscape. The following day, they gathered near the residence of Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf, adding another layer to the growing opposition against the arms manufacturer.

The climax of these actions came on Friday, as activists temporarily occupied the Cologne SPD party office and blocked a building of the engine manufacturer and armaments company Deutz. The demonstration was accompanied by a large police presence, ensuring order was maintained.

Hundreds of people participated in an anti-war march through the heart of Cologne on Saturday. The focus of these protests, organised by the anti-war alliance "Disarm Rheinmetall", is squarely against Rheinmetall. Despite the tense atmosphere, the march through Cologne's city center was one of the actions planned without any reported blockades.

Organisers estimated up to 3,000 participants in the march. Jonah Fischer from the anti-war alliance "Disarm Rheinmetall" was present, along with members of the activist alliance "Rheinmetall Entwaffnen", which has been vocal in its protests against Rheinmetall, including those related to the establishment of a Rheinmetall storage facility in Cologne's Grüngürtel area.

The march was accompanied by a strong police presence, with a total of 1,600 officers deployed in Cologne on Saturday. Initially, the situation remained peaceful, according to statements by a dpa reporter and the police. However, some participants were asked to remove their face coverings, according to a police spokesperson.

Signs and banners at the march read "We won't die in your wars" and "No to conscription", echoing the sentiments of the protesters. The actions of the anti-war alliance "Disarm Rheinmetall" continue to escalate, with daily actions since setting up a camp in Cologne's Grüngürtel. The alliance shows no signs of slowing down in its mission to bring attention to the arms manufacturing industry and the impact it has on global conflicts.
