Latvia to Purchase Additional Spike Anti-Tank Missile Systems

In a recent announcement, Latvia's Minister of Defence, Andris Spruds, has revealed plans to acquire additional Spike anti-tank missile systems. The Spike system, one of the most advanced weapons of its kind globally, is currently in use by the National Armed Forces and has proven effective and meets the operational requirements of the force.

The Minister's statement did not disclose the specific number of systems to be purchased, but it is expected that the new batch will supplement the current stockpiles of this weapon. The delivery of the new systems is scheduled from 2028.

The Spike system consists of fourth- and fifth-generation electro-optical missile systems, capable of destroying various types of armored vehicles, including tanks. The purchase is aimed at strengthening the combat capabilities of regular units and the National Guard.

The previous agreement to purchase Spike systems was signed in 2018, and the current systems are manufactured by the Israeli industry. However, no information was provided about the source of the new batch of Spike systems.

Interestingly, the contract for the additional Spike systems includes a 30% involvement of local industry in their execution. This move is expected to boost the local defence industry and contribute to the country's security.

The Spike anti-tank missile system provides high accuracy, making it an invaluable asset for any military force. The exact details about which company will sign the contract for the delivery of additional Spike missile launcher systems to Latvia in 2028 are yet to be disclosed.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the acquisition of advanced weapons systems like the Spike anti-tank missile system is a strategic move by Latvia to strengthen its defence capabilities and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
