Bremen Police Warn of Fake Policeman Scam
In a recent incident, an 85-year-old woman in Burglesum, Bremen, was targeted by a con artist who attempted to scam her by pretending to be a policeman. The scammer claimed that her son had caused a serious traffic accident and committed several traffic offenses, and demanded cash and jewelry in exchange for releasing her son from police custody.
However, the woman's suspicions were raised when the scammer instructed her not to tell anyone about the incident. She informed a neighbour about the suspicious call, who recognised the scam and alerted the Bremen Police.
The Bremen Police, in collaboration with civilian police officers, were able to stop and search a suspect in connection with the scam attempt. During the search, several mobile phones were found on the man, as well as a switchblade. A search of his car also revealed cash, more mobile phones, and a switchblade.
The impostor arrested by the authorities in Bremen on Monday was a man pretending to be an official or someone he was not, although specific details about his identity or the nature of his deception were not disclosed.
The Bremen Police are warning the public against this scam, urging them to be vigilant and to protect themselves. Never let anyone pressure you into making quick decisions over the phone, and never hand over money or valuables to strangers. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and dial 110 to verify the legitimacy of the call.
For further inquiries, contact the Bremen Police Press Office at 0421/362 12114 or visit their websites: www.polizei.bremen.de and www.polizei-beratung.de. Remember that release from custody after an accident is never dependent on a money payment.
The Bremen Police would also like to remind the public that if they notice anyone acting suspiciously near their residence, they should report it to the authorities immediately. In this particular case, officers had observed a 32-year-old man observing the victim's residence and repeatedly walking up and down the street.
