Law Enforcement Seeks Prohibition on License Plates with AC-AB Designation

In the city of Aachen, located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, the issuance of vehicle license plates is a common occurrence. The Aachen city region issues license plates with the prefix "AC," a fact that has been consistent since the inception of the system.

As of the beginning of June, there were a total of 358,821 Aachen license plates on the roads, excluding those from other regions. However, one particular combination, "AC-DC," has been causing a stir.

The combination "AC-DC," which bears a resemblance to the famous music band, has been issued 1,953 times in total. This number is significantly higher compared to the 1,699 instances of "AC-DC" issued at the beginning of June.

Despite the growing popularity of "AC-DC," the responsible NRW Ministry of Transport has not confirmed that it has become a bestseller. Furthermore, there is no evidence of an "export hit" or "license plate tourism" in response to the combination.

Interestingly, since 2015, license plates from other regions can be used at a new residence in the Aachen city region after a move. However, the reason behind the discontinuation of the issuance of vehicle license plates with the combination AC-AB, or when this decision was made, remains a mystery.

Despite numerous searches, there are no results indicating who made the decision to discontinue the issuance of "AC-AB" license plates or the circumstances surrounding this decision.

In conclusion, the combination "AC-DC" has become a more common sight on Aachen's roads, but its rise to popularity does not seem to have been officially recognised by the NRW Ministry of Transport. The mystery surrounding the discontinuation of "AC-AB" license plates remains unsolved.
