Lawyer former Disney executive files lawsuit alleging unequal pay compensation
Disney Sued for Alleged Pay Inequality by Former Senior Legal Executive
In a significant development, Alisa Clairet, a former senior legal executive for Disney Channel, has filed a lawsuit against the media giant in California state court last month. The lawsuit alleges systemic pay inequality at Disney and brings claims for violations of California Equal Pay Act and unfair competition law, disparate treatment based on sex and retaliation, among others.
Clairet, who served as the lead lawyer for all animated third-party productions and simultaneously managed six live action series, claims that she was paid less than her male counterpart for similar work. From 2019 to 2024, she completed 173 projects with the highest-profile clients compared to 109 by her male counterpart, yet the lawsuit alleges that she did not receive a raise despite receiving a promotion to match his position.
The lawsuit further alleges that Disney hired a man for the same work with a more senior title and higher pay when Clairet started at the company. It also claims that her male counterpart did not complete necessary agreements and documentation for Raven's Home, leading to the show being produced for over two years without basic legal requirements.
The lawsuit expands a legal battle over claims from female employees who say they're paid less than their male counterparts for similar work. Last year, Disney settled a class action from approximately 9,000 workers. However, Disney declined to comment for this story.
The settlement included Disney retaining experts to address salary disparities between men and women employees. The settlement was for $43.25 million.
It is important to note that this lawsuit is separate from a $10 million FTC settlement over collecting children's personal data on YouTube.
The lawyer who filed a lawsuit against Disney over wage inequalities is Shannon Liss-Riordan. Clairet was terminated last year amid Disney's $7.5 billion cost-cutting effort.
As for the latest movie news, 'Ice Age 6' has been renamed 'Boiling Point' and is set for a 2027 release date, but no further details about the movie are provided in this paragraph.
The lawsuit against Disney continues to unfold, and we will keep you updated on any developments.
