In a series of shocking events, Remy St Felix, a 24-year-old alleged mastermind, has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in federal prison for attacking a witness in a North Carolina detention center in October 2022. This sentence, along with others related to his involvement in a string of violent home invasions against cryptocurrency owners, will effectively lengthen his total time behind bars by nearly four years.
St Felix's criminal activities have been linked to a series of "wrench attacks" in France, with multiple victims, particularly in Paris, having their fingers severed while in captivity. The latest wrench attack in France was reported this week, and dozens of arrests have been made in connection with these attacks in the Paris region.
St Felix and his associates have been charged with stealing $3.5 million worth of cryptocurrency. Another co-conspirator, Jarod Gabriel Seemungal, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay $4 million in restitution for providing the home invasion team with rental cars, hotel rooms, and firearms.
The witness, who was testifying to St Felix's involvement in the home invasions, was attacked by St Felix in the North Carolina-based detention center. During the attack, St Felix called the witness a "rat" and later "gloated" about the beating to his girlfriend and mother. St Felix also told the witness that his 47-year prison sentence was their fault.
One of the most heinous crimes attributed to St Felix's crew was the abduction of an individual from their Florida home and the subsequent beating while held hostage, a 120-mile drive away.
In May, St Felix pleaded guilty to one count of retaliation against a witness for testimony in a criminal trial. As a result, he was sentenced to an additional 7 years in prison and ordered to pay $524,000 in restitution, representing the value of stolen assets.
The additional 10-year sentence will run concurrently with his previous 47-year sentence, meaning 36 months of the additional sentence are expected to run concurrent to the previous one. During the attack, St Felix struck the witness in the face, head, and body.
