In a recent development, the German company Schleizer Meat and Sausage Products GmbH has announced a recall of its Zwiebelmettwurst, a 500-gram packaged product, due to the presence of EHEC bacteria.

The affected batch, marked with the batch number 133 and the closure clip, was produced on 11.08.2025 and made available in several German states, including Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Bayern, Hessen, Niedersachsen, Sachsen, and Thüringen. The best before date for the affected product is 27.08.2025.

EHEC, or Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli, is a type of bacteria that can cause severe illnesses in humans. These bacteria are known to cause severe diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure, especially in children, individuals with pre-existing conditions, and the elderly.

The recall comes after certain toxin-producing EHEC bacteria were found in the batch of Zwiebelmettwurst. The company has strongly discouraged consumption of the recalled product.

It is important to note that the 2011 EHEC outbreak in Germany, which resulted in around 3,800 cases and more than 50 deaths, was suspected to be caused by contaminated sprouts from Egyptian-bred fenugreek seeds.

While unrelated to the current recall, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of EHEC bacteria. The public is advised to exercise caution and follow the guidance provided by health authorities regarding food safety.

In the meantime, families in Hamm, who may be affected by the recall, can find support, and those preparing for the election of the Integration Council can look forward to the new postal vote forms. The unemployment rate in Hamm remains high, as it has been.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
