Life-changing decisions often occur during vacation periods
Holidays can be more than just a break from the daily grind, according to a recent study conducted by online travel agent Loveholidays. The research, co-authored by Marco Riederer, Managing Director of Prodinger Tourismusberatung, suggests that holidays can facilitate significant personal breakthroughs, beyond simple escapism.
The study reveals that over two in five Britons (44%) have made life-changing decisions while on holiday. Psychologist Jo Hemmings attributes this phenomenon to the freedom to see clearly, think differently, and make decisions with a fresh perspective that holidays offer.
Luxury all-inclusive resorts ranked second at 22%, for inspiring major life decisions. Beach destinations emerged as the most conducive environment for transformative thinking, inspiring 37% of British holidaymakers to make major life decisions. Solo travel provided ideal conditions for self-discovery, with 21% finding the greatest mental clarity when traveling independently.
Among the top 10 major life decisions made on holiday are deciding to start a family (22%), changing careers (22%), ending relationships (21%), quitting jobs (14%), and starting a business (22%). Other significant choices include moving house (22%), starting a diet or lifestyle overhaul (7%), and buying property or deciding to move (12%).
Interestingly, holidays create environments where challenging choices feel possible and self-honesty emerges more readily than in everyday settings. The study's findings suggest deeper psychological processes at work than simple stress relief or leisure enjoyment during holidays.
More than half of the travellers (58%) credit feeling more relaxed while on holiday for their improved thinking. A quarter (26%) of the travellers point to sunshine as providing necessary mental clarity. The temporary removal from familiar surroundings and daily pressures during travel creates psychological conditions conducive to major life changes.
The research highlights the therapeutic benefits of travel, aligning with growing recognition in the field. The study on the transformation effects of vacations in Great Britain was conducted by Prodinger Tourismusberatung.
