Lifeblood Lux: Initial stage accomplished in early 2026
Luxembourg Street's urban development project, "Lifeline Lux," is making significant strides as construction work progresses swiftly. The first phase, which connected Horbeller Street to the canal, was completed in October 2024.
The second construction phase, from Horbeller Street to house number 315 on Luxembourg Street, is currently underway. By June 2025, the plan is to have all main supply lines laid and the roadway renewed. Ancillary facilities such as sidewalks, garden sheds, new power, water lines, and fiber optic cables will be built by February 2026.
In the second section, from house number 315 to AOK Street, the canal construction and roadway construction will be completed by July 2025. The third construction phase, from Horbeller Street to AOK Street, is scheduled to be completed in September 2025.
Residents can take advantage of a lane accessible to vehicles between 6 pm and 9 am for their convenience. For those interested in district heating and fiber optic connections, applications can be made at 02233 / 53-600 or www.wunsere-website.de for district heating, and at 0221 /2222 5544 (NetCologne) or www.wunsere-website.de for fiber optic.
The Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport, the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM), the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the state of NRW, the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building, as well as the NRW Ministry of Home Affairs, Local Government, Building and Digitalization, provide funding for the "Lifeline Lux" project. The Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) provide additional funding of 171,600 euros for the planned cycle street as part of the federal special program "City and Country."
The "Lifeline Lux" project aims to make Luxembourg Street more attractive and livable. Between Horbeller Street and AOK Street, a traffic-calmed zone with greenery and high stay quality is being created, with intersections becoming two roundabouts, an intermediate cycle street, and a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h. The roundabouts at Bonn Street and Horbeller Street will be built subsequently.
While the exact schedule for the third construction phase is not yet confirmed, the project is expected to be completed and reopened to traffic in early 2027. Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of the "Lifeline Lux" project.
