Life's gravity can unfold

In the 2019/20 school year, a total of 161,760 students began their educational journey in North Rhine-Westphalia. This diverse group of learners consisted of 48.7% girls and 51.3% boys, with a small percentage of 1.0% enrolled in Free Waldorf Schools.

The majority of enrollments were in primary schools, accounting for 95.6% of the total. Meanwhile, 0.2% of students attended Primus Schools, and 3.2% were in special needs schools. Interestingly, 2.2% of enrollments were early enrollments, with these children turning 6 after September 30.

The proportion of foreign students in the 2019/20 school year was 13.9%.

Looking ahead to the 2020/21 school year, the Minister of Education in North Rhine-Westphalia, Yvonne Gebauer, is responsible for the student number forecast. It is expected that the 2020/21 school year will see an increase in student numbers, with 162,000 students anticipated to be enrolled.
