Lightweight Cervélo R5 bicycle frame unveiled, reportedly weighing a mere 651 grams for a size 56

The cycling world is abuzz with the release of the new Cervelo R5, one of the lightest production road bikes in the world. Weighing in at 5.97kg for top SRAM RED and Shimano Dura-Ace builds, this lightweight racing bike is set to retail at $6,500 / £5,000 / €5,699 (frameset) and $9,950 / £8,500 / €8,999 (SRAM Force AXS model), rising to $14,250 / £11,000 / €12,999 (SRAM Red AXS bike).

Canyon, the company behind the new R5, has focused on weight reduction in its design. The frame and fork together weigh 100g less than the previous generation, and Cervelo proprietary components have seen a 326-gram saving. The new UCI legal integrated bar and stem, named the HB18, saves 150 grams and drops 2 watts in aero drag.

The new R5 will be available as a frameset only or in five separate build options and two paint options: black / bronze and black / silver. All bikes will ship with 26mm Vittoria Corsa Pro Speed tyres. The new Reserve wheels have been developed for the bike, with the Reserve 34 / 37 SL wheelset dropping an additional 60 grams.

The geometry of the new Cervelo R5 matches that of the brand's aero race bike, the S5, which was updated this summer. This design ensures the new R5 can handle the power of a WorldTour athlete while remaining lightweight. The R5 features a 2mm drop in BB height to accommodate 29mm tyres.

The prominence and popularity of aero race bikes have not diminished the requirement for the lightest bike possible for pro riders on certain terrain and at certain speeds. The new R5 has been competitive as one of the best lightweight road bikes for a long time, and it has already garnered attention. Pauline Ferrand-Prevéot, who won the recent Tour de France Femmes, used the new R5, and Matteo Jorgenson's unreleased R5 was spotted at the Tour de France in July.

The new R5 is available for purchase now, offering cyclists a chance to ride one of the lightest production road bikes in the world. With its focus on weight reduction, aerodynamics, and power handling, the new Cervelo R5 is poised to make a significant impact in the cycling world.
