Lion Cub Perishes at Schwerin Zoo
In a tragic turn of events, the Asian lion cub born two weeks ago at Schwerin Zoo has passed away. The cub, which was the offspring of mother Heidi, died on Tuesday.
This loss comes after an unsuccessful attempt to have lioness Rubi, who has her own cub, act as a foster mother for the Asian lion cub. Rubi initially showed some interest in the strange cub but soon neglected it, eventually killing it.
Rubi, believed to have been born in 2014, continues to care for her own four-week-old cub at Schwerin Zoo.
The Schwerin Zoo has a long history of success in raising lion cubs. In the past two years, four lion cubs have been successfully raised, with Heidi raising two of them. However, the current cub's death may have been due to its sickness or lack of viability, as the last cub that Heidi did not accept might have been in similar circumstances.
The zoo's participation in the European breeding program for Asian lions is aimed at conserving these critically endangered animals. Asian lions are currently facing a severe threat to their existence, with numbers dwindling in the wild.
Despite the efforts of keepers to stabilize the cub with feedings and medication, the cub's death could not be prevented. No further attempts were made to have Rubi act as a foster mother for the last cub, and no information is available about the current status or health of the other lion cubs raised in Schwerin Zoo.
The Schwerin Zoo remains committed to its role in the European breeding program, working tirelessly to ensure the survival of the Asian lion species.
