Lipowitz of Radstar spotted at D-Tour, serving as water supplier
After more than four months out due to a severe crash at the Tour of Flanders, John Degenkolb, a 36-year-old German cyclist, participated in the second stage of the Deutschland Tour. The race, which is a five-stage event that ends on Sunday in Magdeburg, saw Degenkolb return to the peloton following a challenging time he described as "the worst time of my career."
During the second stage, a 190.3 kilometers-long journey from Herford to Arnsberg in the Sauerland, Degenkolb crossed the finish line with the peloton. The stage, which was mostly a sprint finish, did not result in any significant changes in the overall race leader or the jersey wearers.
Meanwhile, the first stage of the D-Tour was marked by an exciting finish. Matthew Brennan, a British cyclist, won the stage in a photo finish. Jonathan Milan, an Italian cyclist, came second, while Danny van Poppel, a Dutch cyclist, finished third. Interestingly, van Poppel is the overall leader of the Deutschland Tour, as he is wearing the blue jersey. His teammate, Florian Lipowitz, who won the white jersey for the best young rider at the Tour de France, finished the first stage acting as a water carrier for his Red-Bull teammates.
A quartet of riders, including German riders Vinzent Dorn, Jon Knolle, Miguel Heidemann, and American Andrew August, took the opportunity to make a name for themselves during the longest stage of the D-Tour. They built up a lead of nearly 3:30 minutes at one point. However, the last two escapees were caught by the peloton about 10 kilometers from the finish.
Jonathan Malte Rottmann, the best-placed German cyclist in the first stage, finished in tenth place. Lipowitz, who won the white jersey for the best young rider at the Tour de France, took a two-week vacation in South Tyrol and at Lake Garda after his coup in the Tour de France. He finished third in the Tour de France.
In the second stage, there were no significant changes in the overall race leader or the jersey wearers. The focus now shifts to the remaining stages, with the race heating up as the cyclists prepare for the final stretch towards Magdeburg.
