Tamworth's Town Centre Regeneration: A Productive Day of Discussions

Tamworth, a town in Staffordshire, hosted an event aimed at revitalising its town centre at the beginning of this month. The event, known as 'Unlocking Your Place Potential', was a recommendation of the government's High Street 2030 Review.

Councillor Paul Turner, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, attended the event, which provided an opportunity for discussing many great ideas about the regeneration of Tamworth's town centre. The visit was led by Graham Soult, a High Streets specialist expert from Gateshead-based Retail Consultancy, CannyInsights.com.

The event was initiated by the Department of Levelling Up, and visitors included local government bodies, community groups, regional development agencies, and other organisations involved in the regeneration planning. Councillor Paul Turner stated that it was great to talk with the High Streets Task Force and hear feedback about the regeneration ambitions for the town centre.

The neglected state of Tamworth's town centre, which is affected by high levels of inequality and the impact of Covid-19, was the catalyst for the visit. The event included a morning workshop, followed by a tour of the town and a look at the latest regeneration projects.

During the workshop, Tamworth Borough Council presented an informative update on the regeneration plans, which include Middle Entry renovations, restoration and refurbishment of historic properties on Market Street, a new Enterprise Centre in the original 19 Century former Co-operative building on Colehill, and public realm works. These projects, totalling £21m, aim to create a town centre fit for the future.

Councillor Paul Turner described the plans as bold and expressed that it's good to see the plans begin to take shape on the ground. He also welcomed the advice and support from the high streets task force and looked forward to working with them in the future.

Graham Soult described the event as 'A very productive day with Tamworth's High Streets Task Force and Unlocking your Place Potential workshop in Tamworth.' After the event, a town tour was conducted to showcase the progress of the regeneration projects.

The Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities commissioned experts to identify 42 areas of specialism to help support local high streets. The organisations involved in Tamworth's regeneration planning are part of this initiative, working together to breathe new life into the town centre.
