Long-term export capacity guaranteed as Transnet and Tshipi é Ntle Manganese Mining ink a 10-year agreement

In a significant development for South Africa's manganese industry, Transnet SOC Ltd and Tshipi é Ntle Manganese Mining have concluded a 10-year Manganese Export Capacity Allocation Agreement. This partnership aims to unlock opportunities for economic development and industrial growth in the country.

The Tshipi Borwa Mine, operated by Tshipi é Ntle, is a major manganese exporter from South Africa, renowned for its efficient, low-cost production. Located in the mineral-rich Kalahari Manganese field near Hotazel in the Northern Cape, the mine has consistently contributed to export earnings, employment opportunities, and socio-economic development in surrounding communities.

Under the new agreement, Tshipi remains on a stable logistics platform that supports its growth ambitions. Transnet provides Tshipi with long-term certainty on rail and port allocation, securing South Africa's long-term position in the manganese supply chain. This agreement ensures a stable logistics platform for Tshipi's growth, as stated by Mr Ezekiel Lotlhare, the Chief Executive of Tshipi é Ntle Manganese Mining.

The current CEO of Tshipi é Ntle Manganese Mining Ltd, Mr Lotlhare, has been in the role for over a decade, as of recent reports in 2025. No new CEO change has been mentioned since the last noted periods around 2012/2021.

Ms Michelle Phillips, Transnet Group Chief Executive, expressed that the partnership with Tshipi secures sustainable export flows. The agreement will facilitate consistent delivery to international customers, as manganese is a key ingredient in steel production. The contract reflects both parties' commitment to supporting South Africa's competitiveness in international markets.

The partnership is underpinned by strong partnerships, as stated by Mr Lotlhare. It strengthens confidence in South Africa's ability to serve global markets, enabling Tshipi to continue meeting rising global demand for manganese. The agreement will continue to create value for Tshipi's employees, shareholders, and host communities.

The milestone reflects a shared vision between Transnet and Tshipi for South Africa's long-term position in the manganese industry. The agreement secures long-term logistics capacity for Tshipi, one of South Africa's significant manganese producers. This partnership between Transnet and Tshipi aims to contribute to South Africa's socio-economic development and industrial growth for years to come.
