looming apocalypse indicator - "Doomsday Clock" signifies projected end of humanity's existence

The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic representation of the perceived threat to humanity's survival, was first introduced in 1947 by the magazine "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists." Designed by artist Martyl Langsdorf and members such as Eugene Rabinowitch and Ralph E. Lapp, the clock was initially set at "seven minutes to twelve" in Chicago, USA.

Since its inception, the clock has been adjusted 21 times, reflecting the global situation regarding war, climate, and environmental problems, and energy issues. The clock's position is determined by the magazine "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists" in consultation with scientists, including many Nobel laureates, directors, and sponsors.

One of the most significant adjustments occurred in 2010 when the clock was moved back due to the election of US President Barack Obama, signifying a shift towards peace and disarmament. However, the clock was moved back to 100 seconds to midnight in 2020, reflecting a deterioration in political tensions and climate change.

The clock was also moved to 90 seconds to midnight in 2023, reflecting concerns about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the lack of progress in combating climate change. In 2017, the clock was moved to 2.5 minutes to midnight, partly due to the election of Donald Trump as US President.

The clock was set at 7 minutes to 12 due to India's acquisition of nuclear weapons in 1974, and again in 1968 due to China's acquisition of nuclear weapons and the Middle East war. The clock was moved to 3 minutes to 12 due to a lack of global cooperation, climate change, cyber threats, and tensions between the USA and Russia in 2015.

In modern times, the Doomsday Clock is not solely focused on the threat of nuclear war. It also represents concerns about climate change, resource scarcity, and the spread of nuclear weapons. For instance, the clock was moved to 5 minutes to 12 due to nuclear weapons in Iran, North Korea's nuclear test, insecure nuclear materials, and the continued presence of nuclear weapons in Russia and the USA in 2007.

The Doomsday Clock serves as a reminder of the potential dangers facing humanity. It was designed as a symbolic representation to alert the public about the threat of nuclear war, but its focus has expanded over the years to encompass a broader range of global threats. The clock's design was inspired by the saying "it's five to twelve," a stark reminder that time is running out to address these issues.
