In the midst of ongoing geopolitical tensions, Hungary finds itself in a precarious position, with its reliance on Russian gas, nuclear power, and oil escalating. This shift comes at a high cost for Hungary, as it aligns itself with the Kremlin and the aggressive policies of Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n against Ukraine.

The recent strikes on Russian oil refineries, initiated by the Ukrainian armed forces, have caused significant disruptions in Russia's oil supply. This has led to rising fuel prices, a shortage of fuel products, and potential impacts on fuel deliveries to countries like Belarus, a key supplier of energy resources to Russia.

Belarus, under the leadership of dictator Lukashenko, is considered an enemy of Ukraine, similar to Putin. Its capacity to compensate for Russia's fuel shortage is limited due to the limited capacity of its refineries. Moscow's needs are on a much larger scale than what Minsk can provide.

The closure of the pipeline through which Belarus received Russian energy resources has further compounded Belarus' challenges. If fuel is scarce in Belarus, it could weaken the Lukashenko regime, as Belarusians have shown readiness to protest against the war.

Alexander Kharev, a Ukrainian diplomat and political scientist, Director of the Center for Defense Strategies, has been vocal about the situation. He interprets the strike on the Druzhba oil pipeline station in Unecha as a message to both the Kremlin and Lukashenko, given Belarus' role in supplying Russia with fuel.

Meanwhile, OrbΓ‘n and other representatives of the Hungarian regime have criticized the strikes, viewing them as an attack on their sovereignty and an act of war. However, this stance goes against the trend set by the EU, which decided to reduce its energy dependence in 2022. Hungary, contrary to this, increased its dependence on Russian energy resources.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the energy crisis and the strikes on Russian oil refineries are intensifying, reducing Russia's oil revenues, and affecting downstream fuel logistics, including those to Belarus. The future of energy relations in the region remains uncertain.
