The upcoming total lunar eclipse is set to captivate sky-gazers across Germany this Sunday night. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the south and northeast regions of the country are expected to have the best visibility of this celestial event.

This spectacle occurs when the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, placing the moon in the Earth's shadow. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon takes on a reddish-brown hue due to sunlight being deflected by the Earth's atmosphere.

Carolin Liefke from the Haus der Astronomie in Heidelberg has shared that the moon will rise completely darkened during the total lunar eclipse. However, she also cautions that observers may have to wait until the moon is above the haze layers in the sky to see it clearly.

The total lunar eclipse is expected to begin at around 18:41 and end at 20:53. Interestingly, Liefke suggests that the total lunar eclipse may only be visible after it has already left total darkness.

For those seeking a more guided viewing experience, the Bodensee Planetarium in Kreuzlingen near Constance, as well as two observatories in Berlin, will be open for the total lunar eclipse. The Stuttgart observatory is also open for those in the south.

Remarkably, no special equipment is needed to observe the total lunar eclipse, especially in the south where summer holidays are still ongoing. However, the forecast for the total lunar eclipse visibility is still uncertain, according to DWD meteorologist Sebastian Schappert, due to a low-pressure area from the west and possible fog fields.

Despite these potential challenges, the total lunar eclipse promises to be an awe-inspiring event, with its unique reddish tint lighting up the night sky. So, grab your blankets, find a clear spot, and prepare to witness this natural wonder!
