Madrid edges out Mallorca, while Atletico draws in their respective matches
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, two of Spain's football giants, faced off in their respective La Liga matches over the weekend, with both teams showing promising performances despite some setbacks.
In the Mallorca vs. Real Madrid encounter, Xabi Alonso's side displayed a good level of control in the final stages, ultimately securing a hard-fought victory. Alonso brought Vinicius Junior and Trent Alexander-Arnold back into the starting line-up for the match, and it was these two players who made the difference in the second half. Arda Guler and Vinicius Junior scored for Real Madrid in quick succession, responding to Mallorca's surprise 18th-minute lead through Vedat Muriqi. This was the first goal Madrid had conceded in La Liga this season.
However, Real Madrid's victory was not without controversy, as three of their goals were ruled out during the match. Franco Mastantuono, a bright summer signing, also had a goal disallowed for handling the ball in his first Santiago Bernabeu start.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw in their first La Liga match without a win. Diego Simeone's team started the season with three consecutive draws, including a 1-1 stalemate against Alaves. Giuliano Simeone scored the opening goal for Atletico, but Carlos Vicente equalized from the penalty spot.
Antoine Griezmann struck the post from close range in the second half for Atletico Madrid, but they were unable to score. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak expressed anger and disappointment about dropping points, with Simeone stating that he is more concerned about his team's performance rather than the points they have earned. Simeone believes it will take his team some time to click and improve their results.
On Sunday, Barcelona, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao all have the chance to match Madrid's three wins from three games. As the La Liga season continues, these teams will be eager to maintain their momentum and climb up the table.
Elsewhere, Carraseras made a goal-line clearance to prevent Samu Costa's effort from going in, ensuring Real Madrid's clean sheet against Mallorca. Carreras expressed excitement about the new season and adapting to the team quickly, boding well for Real Madrid's continued success.
Kylian Mbappe was judged to be offside and had a goal ruled out early in the match against Mallorca, a reminder of the fine margins that can decide matches in La Liga.
As the La Liga season progresses, both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will be looking to find their rhythm and climb up the table. With exciting talent and experienced coaches at the helm, it promises to be an enthralling season in Spanish football.
