The MG4 electric hatchback is set to make waves in the automotive industry, debuting on August 5 in China. The updated model, manufactured at SAIC's Nanjing facility, boasts several performance advantages over its competitors, particularly the BYD Dolphin.

One of the key features that set the MG4 apart is its rear-wheel-drive motor, a departure from the front-wheel-drive motors found in the Dolphin. This configuration promises improved handling and acceleration.

But the real game-changer for the MG4 is its revolutionary semi-solid-state battery. This innovation makes the MG4 the world's first mass-market electric vehicle to adopt such technology. The battery, developed by QingTaoEnergy, boasts an impressive energy density of 180 Wh/kg and has passed rigorous safety tests, including a 360-degree puncture test.

The semi-solid-state battery in the MG4 also delivers a CLTC-rated range of 537 km, and it has 13.8% better cold-weather range retention than lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. This means that the MG4 should perform well even in cold climates.

The updated MG4 is not just about performance, though. It also offers enhanced interior space and cargo capacity due to its larger dimensions. Measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and having a 2,750 mm wheelbase, the MG4 is larger than its predecessor and surpasses the Dolphin's length of 4,280 mm.

The design of the updated MG4 is inspired by MG's Cyberster, giving it a sleek and futuristic look. It comes in two new colours, Qingbo Green and Donglai Purple.

In addition to its impressive battery and design, the updated MG4 will also introduce the MG×Oppo cockpit system. This system integrates smartphone functions, voice commands, gesture navigation, and app synchronisation, aiming to provide a seamless and modern driving experience.

The launch of the updated MG4 is a significant step towards making solid-state batteries mainstream, and it is poised to compete directly with the BYD Dolphin. While no new fact about the battery's performance or characteristics was mentioned, the potential advantages of the semi-solid-state battery could give the MG4 a significant edge in the market.
