Major collision involving a truck brings traffic on A4 to a halt for extended periods.
The A4 Dresden-Chemnitz highway experienced a significant incident late on Thursday night, as a Polish truck carrying packaged adhesives veered off the road and overturned near Hainichen.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 1 AM. The truck came to rest against the guardrail, causing a blockage in the traffic flow towards Chemnitz. As a result, the A4 was fully closed for several hours.
Fortunately, the 55-year-old driver of the truck remained uninjured in the accident. However, the recovery of the truck and the subsequent clearance operations took until Saturday morning at 8:00 AM. During the recovery process, fuel and engine oil leaked out, causing additional complications.
The clearance operations were completed according to police reports, and traffic on the A4 Dresden towards Chemnitz has since resumed. The total material damage from the incident is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of euros.
The identity of the Polish driver has not been publicly disclosed. He is described only as a 55-year-old driver. It was later revealed that he is, in fact, a 55-year-old Ukrainian driver.
The authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the highway. The A4 will remain fully closed until around 11 AM for the complex recovery and cleaning operations.
We encourage all drivers to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits when travelling on highways, especially during adverse weather conditions or in the presence of roadworks. Let's work together to ensure the safety of our roads.
