Manchester United Manager Fired Once More After Disappointing Summer in Germany

Erik ten Hag's Departure from Bayer Leverkusen and His Successful Tenure at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag, the former boss of Manchester United, has parted ways with Bayer Leverkusen after just two games. The Dutch manager took charge at Leverkusen following his departure from Old Trafford, but his tenure was short-lived.

Ten Hag joined Leverkusen in 2022, after a successful stint at Manchester United where he won the League Cup in his first season and guided the team to the Champions League. However, his time at Leverkusen was marred by a steep drop-off, with the team failing to win their first two games of the Ten Hag era.

Before his move to Leverkusen, Ten Hag had established a reputation as a highly successful manager during his time at Ajax and Bayern Munich. He led Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 and was given a vote of confidence by Manchester United's minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, before the start of his third campaign at Old Trafford.

During his tenure at Manchester United, Ten Hag faced a steep drop-off in his second term, finishing eighth and winning the FA Cup to qualify for the Europa League. Despite this, he managed to win an FA Cup with the team in 2024. Ten Hag was given nine matches in charge before his departure, winning three, drawing two, and losing the other four.

In his first season at Manchester United, Ten Hag led the team to the Champions League, a significant achievement for the club. He also managed to secure the signings of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Matthijs De Ligt, Leny Yoro, and Manuel Ugarte during his time at the club.

Bayer Leverkusen have had a torrid summer in terms of player departures, with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Lukas Hradecky, and Amine Adli all leaving the club this summer. The new head coach of Leverkusen after Ten Hag's departure is Kasper Hjulmand, who has signed a contract until 2027 and officially took over the position in September 2025.

Meanwhile, Piero Hincapie is expected to join Bayer Leverkusen today, providing some much-needed reinforcements for the struggling German side. Leverkusen will host Eintracht Frankfurt after the international break, with the team hoping to turn their fortunes around under their new manager.

Ten Hag's departure from Bayer Leverkusen marks the end of a brief but eventful chapter in his managerial career. With his reputation as a highly successful manager, it is likely that he will not be out of work for long.
