Māori Queen to deliver inaugural royal speech at Koroneihana ceremonies
The anticipation on the ground has been building over the course of the week, as the country prepares for a significant event. Today, on the fourth day of Koroneihana, Te Arikinui Kuini, the current Maori monarch, is scheduled to make her first royal address.
This momentous occasion marks the end of a year-long public silence in observance of a period of mourning following the death of the late Kingi Tuheitia. Te Arikinui has travelled extensively around the country and the Pacific during this time, upholding the custom of kawe mate.
Born into the kōhanga reo generation, Te Arikinui's education has equipped her with a strong foundation in historical aspects, te reo Māori, and tikanga. She attended the kōhanga reo movement and kura kaupapa Māori, immersion learning pathways for children that were significant initiatives for Maori language revitalization in the 1980s.
The kōhanga reo generation refers to Maori under the age of 45 who grew up during the language revitalization efforts of the 1980s. As a member of this generation, Te Arikinui has shown dignity in embracing tradition while also adapting to the "futuristic aspects" of Kiingitanga.
The Kiingitanga, like many institutions, will have to adapt to the rise of social media and AI in order to "roll with the times". Te Arikinui, being a "wahine rangatahi" (young woman), is well-positioned to lead this change.
Ngātiwai leader Aperahama Edwards described the hope and excitement surrounding Te Arikinui's address. Kiingitanga spokesperson Rahui Papa emphasized the importance of Te Arikinui and her immediate whānau visiting various regions, including poukai.
Over the past twelve months, Te Arikinui has made appearances at various events, including her first visit to Te Waipounamu as queen. The event today is not only a milestone for Te Arikinui but also a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Maori culture.
Despite the limited information available about which institution Kuini Nga wai attended during her education or which qualifications she acquired, it is clear that Te Arikinui's education has provided her with a unique perspective and a strong foundation to lead the Kiingitanga into the future.
