Maritime Captain Navigating Cargo Vessel With a Blood Alcohol Content of Two Promille

A cargo ship navigating the Mittelland Canal near Bückeburg faced unexpected disruptions due to the intoxicated state of its captain and sailor. Witnesses in Wunstorf-Kolenfeld near Hannover reported unusual steering behavior from the vessel, which required multiple attempts for the captain to maneuver the cargo ship.

According to reports, both the 36-year-old captain and the 33-year-old sailor were found to be heavily intoxicated on board. The captain had a blood alcohol level of 0.02%, while the sailor's level was slightly higher at 0.022%.

The water police were promptly deployed and instructed the captain to dock the cargo ship. A criminal investigation for drunk boating was initiated by the police, and the name of the captain is not publicly disclosed.

The cargo ship's journey was temporarily halted as a result of these incidents. The police also prohibited further travel for the cargo ship, ensuring the safety of other vessels and passengers on the canal.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behaviour while operating a vessel, especially on busy waterways like the Mittelland Canal. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
