In a thrilling opening game of the season, the University of Maryland Terrapins showcased their defensive prowess as they secured a 40-21 victory over Florida Atlantic University.

The Terrapins' defense was particularly impressive in the first quarter, committing five penalties on Florida Atlantic's opening drive, but the Owls were unable to capitalise, failing to score. This defensive tenacity set the tone for the rest of the game.

Maryland's offense, led by true freshman Malik Washington, responded with a strong showing. Washington threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, including two 29-yard touchdown passes to Shaleak Knotts and Kaleb Webb.

The second quarter was a turning point for the Terrapins, as they scored an impressive 26 points. Three of these points came from Washington's touchdown passes, with Dorian Fleming scoring a 9-yard touchdown to increase Maryland's lead to 26-7. Sean O'Haire also contributed with two field goals, one from 24 yards and another from 42 yards, giving Maryland a 10-point lead.

The defense continued to shine, recording six interceptions against Florida Atlantic. Daniel Wingate, a Maryland linebacker, had a touchdown interception and a team-high 10 tackles. Dontay Joyner, Lavain Scruggs, and La'khi Roland also intercepted passes for the Terrapins.

In the third quarter, O'Haire extended Maryland's lead with a 49-yard field goal. However, Florida Atlantic's Caden Veltkamp, who remained the starting quarterback despite throwing four interceptions in the opening loss, showed resilience. He connected with Asaad Waseem for a 27-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7-7, but the Terrapins responded with another touchdown to regain the lead.

The final 15-plus minutes of the game saw Khristian Martin and Justyn Martin taking snaps at quarterback for Maryland. Justyn Martin was injured and carried off the field after being tackled on a QB keeper earlier in the game.

Despite a strong showing by Florida Atlantic's Easton Messer, who caught 15 passes for 87 yards, the Owls struggled to keep up with Maryland's offensive and defensive prowess. Zach Gibson, the Florida Atlantic backup quarterback, was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter, further cementing Maryland's victory.

This game marked the most interceptions in a game by the Maryland defense since 1998, demonstrating their exceptional performance and potential for the season ahead. The University of Maryland will undoubtedly be a team to watch as they continue their season.
