Maryland Transit Authority announces that a cybersecurity breach has disrupted some of its operational services.
In a turn of events, the Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) is currently investigating a cybersecurity incident, causing disruptions in various services. Unauthorized access has been made to some of the MTA's systems, resulting in temporary suspension of certain services.
Riders may experience delays in receiving notifications about train arrival or departures at stations, and the Mobility paratransit services are unable to schedule new trips or rebook existing ones. However, the MTA's main services, including Local Bus, Metro Subway, Light Rail, MARC, Call-A-Ride, and Commuter Bus, are still operating.
Adam Thompson, a digital content producer for our Baltimore, is closely monitoring the situation. Thompson shared, "While the incident has caused some inconvenience, the MTA is working diligently to resolve the issue and restore full service as quickly as possible."
In a positive turn of events, Maryland is strengthening its position as a cybersecurity hub. IronCircle, a global cybersecurity education provider, has relocated its global headquarters to Columbia, Maryland. The company's platform uses artificial intelligence to simulate complex, real-world cybersecurity scenarios, and its services are used by universities and businesses across the world.
Governor Wes Moore expressed excitement about partnering with IronCircle, stating, "By focusing on industries of the future like cyber and AI, my administration is growing Maryland's economy and building new pathways to work, wages, and wealth for all." The governor's office expects the new IronCircle headquarters to create over 200 jobs in Maryland.
Moreover, the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has also moved its global headquarters for cybersecurity training from Baltimore to Columbia, Maryland. The new building is expected to be completed in 2025.
The relocation of IronCircle's global headquarters to Columbia is expected to create opportunities for Maryland's cyber workforce, including roles for cybersecurity contractors and instructors. Governor Moore affirmed that the state is growing as the cyber capital of America, with IronCircle's decision as a significant affirmation.
As the first day of school encourages extra travel time for riders due to the cybersecurity incident, the MTA is collaborating with third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement partners to assess the extent of the incident and its origin. The MTA is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its riders and is working tirelessly to resolve the issue.
In the meantime, Adam Thompson will continue to provide updates on the situation. Stay tuned for more information.
