"Mason Greenwood snubs Steve McClaren despite multiple discussions, leaving the latter disheartened"
Mason Greenwood's International Future Remains Uncertain
Manchester United's promising young striker, Mason Greenwood, currently plies his trade for French Ligue 1 side Marseille, having made a permanent move for £26.6 million last year. Despite his impressive form in club football, Greenwood's international career is shrouded in uncertainty.
Greenwood signalled his intention to switch allegiances from England to Jamaica last summer, but his international debut is yet to materialise. He has made just one appearance for the Three Lions, a Nations League victory over Iceland in 2020, but was sent home from the camp for breaching Covid rules.
Steve McClaren, the Jamaica boss, had hoped to count on Greenwood for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago. However, Greenwood turned down McClaren's call for September's qualifiers, choosing to focus on club football and not committing to an international team at the moment.
McClaren expects Greenwood to love Jamaica and wants to pursue him for the international team. He remains hopeful that Greenwood will be available for next month's double header against Curacao and Bermuda.
Greenwood's decision not to commit to Jamaica yet leaves the door open for a potential England national team nomination in the future. The delay in making the switch means Greenwood's international future remains a topic of speculation.
In addition to his off-field issues, Greenwood made headlines in October 2022 when he was charged with attempted rape, coercive control and ABH. However, the charges were dropped in February 2023.
Before his move to Marseille, Greenwood spent a season-long loan at Getafe where he netted 10 goals in 36 appearances. Since joining Marseille, Greenwood has become a fan favourite at the Orange Velodrome, netting 23 goals and registering 8 assists in 39 appearances.
There has been ongoing interest from clubs in signing Greenwood, but Marseille have made it clear that the player is not for sale. Despite this, Greenwood's international future remains undecided, with neither England nor Jamaica able to secure his commitment at this time.
