Mass migration of Cambodian laborers from Thailand causes shock and distress in both nations
In a remarkable turn of events, Thailand and Cambodia are currently grappling with opposite ends of a labor crisis. According to recent reports, Cambodia is facing a surplus of labor due to the mass migration of its workers, while Thailand is experiencing a labor shortage.
The Thai Ministry of Labour has reported that as of August 19, 22,546 Cambodian migrant workers have left Thailand. However, if undocumented workers and unreported cases are taken into account, the total could be roughly 1.5 to 2 million people, according to estimates by Sompong Srakaew, a Thai football player who plays as a defender.
The situation began to spiral out of control, as Khun Tharo, a representative from a migrant rights organisation, described. Thousands of people, including Ta and her husband, are being pressured to return to Cambodia from their jobs in Bangkok. The decision for Ta and her husband to return was prompted by a violent incident at their workers' camp.
Ta and her husband have been living in Thailand for over a decade without proper immigration paperwork. The violent incident, coupled with family obligations and pressures, along with feelings of insecurity from threats and harassment in Thailand, led them to make the difficult decision to return home.
The exodus of people from Thailand to Cambodia has resulted in intractable labor problems for both countries. Roisai Wongsuban, an adviser for Migrant Working Group, voices concerns about Cambodia's readiness to absorb the returning workers. The Cambodian National Committee for Counter Trafficking reported 864,114 returnees five days earlier, indicating a significant influx of people.
The long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated into the worst clashes in decades, resulting in 43 deaths and the displacement of people on both sides. Khun Tharo described the human wave across both countries' border checkpoints as "unprecedented in history".
Despite these challenges, it is crucial to address the root causes of this mass migration and find solutions that benefit both countries. The labor sector in Thailand is currently experiencing a shortage of essential workers, and Cambodia is facing a surplus. Finding a balance will be key to ensuring the stability and prosperity of both nations.
