Mazda Vows to Equip Everything with Hybrid Technology, Starting with the Mazda CX-5 Hybrid
Mazda Announces Next-Gen CX-5 Hybrid, Sets Sights on Electrification
Mazda has unveiled its plans for the next generation of its popular CX-5 SUV, including the introduction of a new hybrid powertrain. The automaker's Managing Director for Australia, Vinesh Bhindi, confirmed that the upcoming hybrid will be a completely Mazda-designed system, delivering the iconic "Zoom-Zoom" driving experience.
The new hybrid powertrain for the CX-5 will not be available at launch, with an expected arrival as early as 2027. In the meantime, the 2.5-litre engine in the CX-5 will be slightly detuned and will serve as an interim solution until the hybrid arrives.
The hybrid system's performance capabilities have been promised to be promising, according to statements made by Mazda representatives. Stefan Meisterfeld, Vice President of Strategic Planning for Mazda North American Operations, stated that the hybrid's performance will be comparable to or exceeding the turbo powertrain.
The hybrid powertrain will not be limited to the CX-5 but may also be used in other Mazda models, including the CX-30. Additionally, the CX-60 and up models with longitudinal powertrain set-ups will receive a unique hybrid solution.
Mazda is also working on reinventing its electric future, with links to China's CATL. Ongoing studies for a Mazda electric sedan (6e) in Australia indicate a commitment to a comprehensive electrification strategy.
It's worth noting that the next-gen CX-5 line-up no longer includes the entry-level 2.0-litre engine and the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol performance engine. The hybrid powertrain will be the flagship powertrain option for the CX-5.
There are no immediate plans to implement the CX-5's hybrid powertrain in other cars, but it is a future possibility. Daniel Wakelam, Mazda Australia's National Manager Product and Business Strategy, has stated a desire to get hybrids through everything in the Mazda range.
The EZ-60 SUV, which is waiting for right-hand drive approval, may also benefit from Mazda's new hybrid technology in the future. With these developments, Mazda is clearly positioning itself as a leader in the electrification of the automotive industry.
