On May 12, 2022, a significant visit took place at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. The delegation, led by Hu Chunhua, the party secretary of Guangdong Province, included high-ranking officials such as Xu Qin, the mayor of Shenzhen, Cui Tiankai, the Chinese Ambassador to the United States, and Zhang Qiyue, the consul-general to New York.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss potential future collaborations between the McGovern Institute and the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), with the aim of developing new therapies for brain diseases in Guangdong. The delegation listened to presentations on the McGovern Institute's collaborative projects, specifically those in Guangdong Province, which were highlighted for their potential to offer real hope.

During the meeting, Robert Desimone, the director of the McGovern Institute, emphasized the institute's focus on brain diseases, such as autism and Alzheimer's. The conversation also covered the commercial development of new therapeutics for these diseases. Martin Schmidt, the MIT Provost, was also present during the discussions.

The delegation was given tours of various MIT facilities, including the MIT Media Lab, to gain a better understanding of the institute's research and development capabilities. Party Secretary Hu Chunhua expressed a sincere concern for people suffering from brain diseases, including autism and Alzheimer's, and the delegation's concern extended to a wide range of brain diseases.

Robert Desimone stated that the McGovern Institute's collaborative projects in Guangdong Province offer real hope. The institute's collaborative projects with SIAT were also emphasized as offering hope. Fan Jianping, the director of SIAT, also attended the meeting.

At the moment, there are no search results indicating which organization will cooperate with the McGovern Institute in the future on developing new therapies for brain diseases in Guangdong. However, the discussions and tours provided a solid foundation for potential future collaborations. The visit served as a testament to the shared commitment between the McGovern Institute, SIAT, and the Chinese delegation to address the pressing issue of brain diseases.
