McLaren rule over final practice session at Dutch Grand Prix
In the Formula 1 race at Zandvoort, Lando Norris has been the star of the practice sessions, outpacing his competitors in both sessions. His fastest time of one minute 8.972 seconds set a new lap record, indicating his dominance on the track.
However, it was Oscar Piastri who clinched the pole position in the qualifying session on Saturday. Despite Norris's impressive practice times, Piastri managed to set a quicker lap, securing his first pole position in six races.
Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, put in a surprising performance in the second practice session, finishing third, narrowly beating Piastri. George Russell from Mercedes also found himself in third place, but nearly a second behind Norris.
McLaren has been the team to beat in the practice sessions, outperforming the rest of the grid on both Friday and Saturday. This strong performance has further solidified their lead in the constructors' championship, currently 299 points ahead of their nearest rivals.
Max Verstappen, hoping for rain on Sunday as he excels in wet weather conditions, finds himself in an unfamiliar position - fifth place. Despite a strong showing in the practice sessions, finishing third, Verstappen faces an uphill battle to make the podium in front of his home crowd at Zandvoort.
The qualifying session took place at 3pm (1300 GMT), but did not provide specific information about the championship title race or the grid. The practice sessions, while marked by multiple interruptions and crashes, were held in dry conditions.
The grid position is seen as more important at Zandvoort than at other circuits as it is challenging to overtake. With Norris carrying momentum into the battle for pole position, the race promises to be an exciting one.
