Grand Prix of Zandvoort: A Turbulent Second Practice Session

The second practice session for the Grand Prix of Zandvoort was marked by a series of spins, crashes, and unexpected performances. Here's a recap of the key events.

Lewis Hamilton had a moment in the long, sweeping corners 9 and 10, spinning 360 degrees on his first soft attempt. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso, the reigning champion and McLaren's only rival in Zandvoort, had a cleaner run but did fewer full-tank laps, making his pace uncertain.

McLaren's times were worse than they initially seemed, due to specific issues affecting both drivers. Lando Norris, who led both practices, had a spin in the first corner and a slide in the middle sector. His teammate, Alonso, finished second, just 0.087 seconds behind.

The weather in Zandvoort, known for its blustery winds, played a significant role in Friday's mistakes. Aston Martin and Williams could potentially cause trouble for the usual front-running teams, with Carlos Sainz performing well in the second practice.

Williams is putting pressure on the top group, with Sainz's performance suggesting they could challenge the established order. Mercedes, however, remains the best car in the group, with George Russell having a four-tenths gap to P4.

Red Bull is struggling with high-downforce tracks, as Max Verstappen can't seem to get his car into the corners without it suddenly snapping out. Ferrari, on the other hand, is a special case. Their drivers are losing several tenths to McLaren in the long, sweeping corners 9 and 10 due to a lack of trust.

George Russell's current starting position for the Grand Prix of Zandvoort is 5th place, behind Oscar Piastri (pole), Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Isack Hadjar, who secured 4th ahead of Russell. Piastri struggled with slow corners and the chicane in both practices.

However, Alonso's performance in long runs was impressive, placing him in the top group for the first time this season. His lap included a suspicious top speed advantage and a nice tow on the straight.

The second practice was fragmented due to two red flags and a drizzle. Alex Albon's crash in the second practice affected Sainz's lap, who had set an absolute best time in the first sector. The Mercedes W16 didn't look particularly well-balanced, but it didn't look disastrously unbalanced either.

As the race weekend continues, teams will be working hard to address these issues and find the optimal setup for the challenging Zandvoort circuit. Stay tuned for more updates from the Grand Prix of Zandvoort.
