Medical Update on Shelby Miller: Another Tommy John Surgery for the Brewers Pitcher
In a series of setbacks for the Milwaukee Brewers, starting pitcher Shelby Miller and outfielder Christian Yelich have been sidelined due to injuries.
Shelby Miller, who was acquired by the Brewers at the trade deadline, is set to undergo an evaluation by Dr. Keith Meister next week. The search results do not identify Dr. Meister as the person who will perform Miller's elbow evaluation, and no specific information about him related to this medical task was found. It is unfortunate that Miller's 2022 season has come to an end due to a UCL strain, just as he seemed to have finally turned a corner with the Diamondbacks this season, boasting a 3-3 record, a 1.98 ERA, and 10 saves in 37 appearances. Miller opted out of the COVID campaign due to the birth of his first child and missed almost the entire 2017 season and the first two months of 2018 after undergoing his first Tommy John surgery. Miller is now expecting a second Tommy John surgery.
Meanwhile, Christian Yelich has been scratched from the starting lineup for Milwaukee's game against the Phillies due to lower back soreness. The back soreness started after Yelich slid while stretching a single into a double against the Diamondbacks last week. Yelich is expected to miss the series finale on Thursday but should return to action on Friday against Pittsburgh.
On a positive note, LHP DL Hall is expected to begin plyometric work this week and is on track for a potential return later this month. LHP Logan Henderson is receiving conservative care for a mild flexor strain and could return for the playoffs. First baseman Rhys Hoskins is still on a minor-league rehab assignment and is expected to return in the next few weeks.
Jackson Chourio, another Brewers player, was held out of Milwaukee's lineup due to cramping in his right hamstring. This is a precautionary measure after he missed a month due to a right hamstring strain.
Miller made his Milwaukee debut on Aug. 9 and made 11 appearances before feeling a pop in his elbow during an appearance against the Phillies on Monday. RHP Trevor Megill is recovering from a forearm flexor strain and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday, with a goal of returning mid-September.
As the Brewers navigate these injuries, they will undoubtedly be looking forward to the return of their key players and the potential contributions they can make in the remaining games of the season.
