Mercedes' G-Class achieves 600,000 units: historic milestone for an iconic Mercedes model

The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class continues to set standards in design and off-road capability, as it recently marked a significant milestone with the production of its 600,000th vehicle. The milestone G-Class model, an electrified G 580 with EQ Technology, was finished in obsidian black metallic and produced at the company's plant in Graz, Austria by Mercedes-Benz itself.

With over 20,000 paint choices available for G-Class buyers, the catalogue of available options has expanded significantly. This extensive range allows customers to tailor their G-Class to their unique tastes, a feature that has made the vehicle a popular choice for customisation. In fact, more than 90% of G-Class buyers opt for bespoke touches, on average, adding an average of three customisations per car.

The electrified G-Class, rated in CO2 class A under the WLTP standard, retains its instant recognisability with design cues like round headlights, a side-hinged tailgate, and a boxy silhouette. It also boasts a claimed combined energy consumption of 30.3-27.7kWh/100km, and with zero tailpipe emissions, it is a testament to Mercedes' commitment to sustainability.

The G-Class, first launched in 1979, retains its original ladder frame, all-wheel drive, and triple diff locks, ensuring it remains a formidable off-road vehicle. Despite the integration of electric power, the G-Wagen is charging ahead, with Mercedes not slowing down and planning to release more low-volume specials and heritage-inspired editions of the G-Class.

One such special edition was the Edition Stronger Than the 1980s, a nod to the W460 series of the G-Class. Since 2019, Mercedes' Manufaktur program has made the G-Class one of the brand's most customizable offerings, allowing customers to create a G-Class that truly reflects their personality.

As the G-Class continues to evolve, its tradition remains true. It remains a symbol of luxury, off-road capability, and customisation, and with its extensive range of options, it is sure to continue to be a popular choice for years to come.
