Mexico City deploys Kapsch Intelligent Transportation Systems' license plate recognition technology
The Palmillas - Apaseo Highway, northwest of Mexico City, has been transformed with the implementation of a cutting-edge Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Developed by Kapsch TrafficCom, this system is designed to optimise tolling, road pricing, and usage-charges, providing valuable information to support operations and decision-making.
At the heart of the system is Kapsch TrafficCom's EcoTrafiX, which integrates all components for real-time monitoring and operational decision-making from a control center located in Querétaro. The system includes the installation of 21 traffic cameras, six variable message signs, one weather station, two weigh-in-motion stations, and five traffic counting points with axle-based classification.
One of the key features of the ITS is its ability to generate origin-destination matrices and track queue times at toll plazas. It also calculates travel times for each subsection and the entire section, providing visibility of hourly occupancy levels. The system enhances road safety by continuously monitoring vehicles with a Vehicle Integrity System based on License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras.
In case of any anomalies, the system sends immediate alerts to the control center, ensuring swift action can be taken to maintain smooth traffic flow. The technology also provides valuable data on travel times, which can be used to improve the overall efficiency of the highway.
The implementation of this advanced ITS is a significant step towards modernising Mexico's transportation infrastructure. It demonstrates the potential of technology to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and support decision-making in the transportation sector.
For those interested in learning more about user-financed transportation, a conference series organised by Akabo Media will take place in Miami (September 2025), Singapore (October 2025), Brussels (March 2026), and Abu Dhabi (May 2026). These events will provide a platform for industry professionals to discuss the latest developments and challenges in the field.
